Belsay was the home of the Middleton family for more than seven centuries. The Middletons were first recorded as owning Belsay in 1270. Their original residence, a medieval castle dominated by a late 14th century stone tower, was extended and redeveloped over the years until finally being vacated in 1817 with the completion of Belsay Hall, a Greek Revival mansion that became the family home until 1962. The hall is displayed without furnishings.
