Castle Tioram

Castle Tioram is built on a small rocky island in Loch Moidart in a very picturesque location. It is a roughly five-sided enclosure of high walls with rounded-off corners built in the early 13th century. Buildings, including a tower house, were constructed inside, but these are now ruins. For most of its existence the castle belonged to the Lord of the Isles and is the ancestral home of the Macdonalds of Clan Ranald. There was a major fire in 1715 that left the castle uninhabitable.

Location:
Reached by a minor road to Cul Doirlinn, off the A861 near Acharacle. The castle is on a small island reached via a sandy causeway that is cut off at high tide.
Access:
Privately owned. Exterior viewable only.
