Edinburgh Castle Central Scotland
Castle Hill, Edinburgh, EH1 2NG Historic Scotland
Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is built high upon the basalt remains of a long extinct volcano, providing visitors with impressive views of the city and landscape beyond. The oldest part of the castle dates back to the Normans, and there are buildings and fortifications covering every period since.

The castle is home to the Scottish Crown Jewels (Honours), the Stone of Destiny, the giant 15th century siege gun, Mons Meg, the Scottish National War Memorial and the famous One O'Clock Gun, which is fired daily at 1.00pm. The castle also contains several military and regimental museums.

Disabled visitors can park on the Esplanade directly in front of the castle, where a courtesy bus is available to take visitors with disabilities to Crown Square.

From Crown Square visitors with disabilities can gain access to the Crown Jewels. There is a ramp over the four steps into the Great Hall and there is also a ramp at St Margaret's Chapel.

Wheelchairs are available from the castle but steep, cobbled roadways make pushing hard work.

There is good access to most of the castle, but due to width restrictions some areas are unsuitable for wheelchair access. These are: the military prisons, the west museum in Crown Square, St Margaret's Chapel, Queen Mary's Room, King's Dining Room and Crown Jewels exhibition, although most of these areas are accessible for more mobile visitors.
